AbstractThis monograph, addressed primarily to the concerns of practitioners, was written mostly by two-year college practitioners. Chapter 1, "Opportunities in Legacy" (Charles R. Dassance), discusses qualities of the two-year college, its special commitment to guidance of students, and its commitment to teaching as a primary thrust of educational service. Chapter 2, "Opportunities in Diversity" (Steven R. Helfgot), uses the heterogeneous characteristics of the typical two-year college student to demonstrate how special the two-year college is for practicing student affairs. Chapter 3, "Opportunities Through Interdependence" (Edward W. Phoenix, et al.), contains an analysis of the opportunities provided by the interdependent relationships between two-year colleges and other institutions or segments of society. Chapter 4, "Opportunities in Challenge" (John Cordova and Kay Martens), considers that forces associated with promoting student development in four-year colleges do not have the same consequences in two-year colleges. Chapter 5, "Opportunities in the Future" (Don G. Creamer), analyzes characteristics of a potent learning environment, a proposed standard of organization effectiveness for the profession, and a profile of the new leader needed in the two-year college. Principles for practice are suggested to guide practitioners in two-year colleges. (NB)
