Abstract | The need for an analytical approach to the study of phatic, metalingual, and metacommunicative functions in asymmetrical communicative situations (between native speakers and language learners) is discussed. The study presents theoretical frameworks for gambits and repairs, the linguistic phenomena that primarily serve those functions, and discusses their interrelationship. It outlines hypotheses about repair work in interactions between native speakers and learners at different proficiency levels, and argues that the discourse-analytical approach should be broadened to include a psycholinguistic dimension in order to adequately explain communicative behavior.
