| Abstract | This paper uses symbolic convergence theory and evoked recall or resonance theory in an attempt to explain the phenomenon of "A Prairie Home Companion"--a weekly live radio program broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio featuring music and the "news" from fictional Lake Wobegon as related by Garrison Keillor, the show's originator. The paper first examines symbolic convergence theory and then presents evidence of symbolic convergence or "chaining out" in the products and articles that have grown out of the popularity of the radio show. Evoked recall theory is also explained and examples from the radio show are provided to illustrate the theory. The paper argues that the combination of symbolic convergence and resonance theories creates a hybrid called an evoked vision: the ideas catch and "chain out" because they resonate with experiential memories which are evoked by artful and dramatic cues. A long description of Lake Wobegon and its inhabitants is provided. The paper concludes that the rhetorical vision of Lake Wobegon has chained out to a significant number of persons who have adopted the values of the vision and incorporated it into their own lives.
