AbstractWritten for teachers, this paper reviews basic concepts and issues relating to the topic of student motivation in the classroom and suggests strategies for teachers to use in motivating their students. The paper identifies four essential preconditions that must be in place if teachers are to motivate effectively and then provides descriptions and examples of four sets of motivational strategies: strategies for maintaining students' success expectations, strategies for supplying extrinsic motivation, strategies for capitalizing on existing intrinsic motivation, and strategies for stimulating student motivation to learn the knowledge or skills that academic activities are designed to develop. The last set of strategies is given special emphasis because these strategies have been relatively neglected in writings on motivation in the classroom, even though these are the only strategies that will directly stimulate the type of high-quality engagement in academic content that is the heart of students' motivation to learn. The examples are drawn mostly from junior high social studies classes, although the principles apply to all grade levels and subject matter areas. (A six-page reference list concludes the document.)
