| Abstract | Presenting an historical overview of the development of speech courses at Millersville University (Pennsylvania), this paper analyzes the past, present, and future status of speech communication within the context of the general education curriculum. The historical perspective treats the origins and definition of speech as a college course offering; traces its development in the curriculum and its relationship to pedagogy, radio, television, and public speaking; and chronicles the rise and fall of the speech major. The contemporary view of the speech department explores the implications of three considerations: faculty changes, a departmental name change, and the suggested revision of the campus-wide general education curriculum. Looking to the future, the paper explores indications that point to the disappearance of the required speech course and the creation of mass lectures and multiple section laboratories to cover the backlog of students needing to take the course, with a possible reduction in faculty.
