AbstractA study was conducted which continued the investigation of the underlying structure of supervision by empirically testing Bernard's (1979) two-dimensional model and Littrell et al.'s (1979) unidimensional developmental model of supervision. To test the models, 25 counselor trainees from two master's counselor programs were compared to 23 counselor trainees from a doctoral counseling psychology program on their perceptions of supervision. Additionally, the trainees' perceptions were compared to the three-dimensional map for supervisors found by Ellis and Dell (1986). Twelve stimuli were generated by combining each of the four supervisor roles (teacher, counselor, consultant, and self-supervisor) with the three supervisor functions (process, conceptualization, and personalization). Subjects made paired comparison ratings for perceived dissimilarity of the 12 supervisor role stimuli and rated the 12 stimuli on 10 attributes. Goodness of fit measures indicated that both supervisors and trainees used the same cognitive map of supervision, a finding consistent with Ellis et al. The supervisory model proposed by Bernard was somewhat supported, but little support was found for the Littrell et al. model. In general, these results suggest that: (1) current models of supervision are conceptually too narrow; and (2) supervisors' and trainees' cognitive maps of supervision are similar. (ABL)
