Abstract | This curriculum guide is the first of a four-volume set that is intended to improve career and vocational guidance services to Spanish-speaking students in grades 9 through 12. The first section, an introduction to the teacher, includes a discussion of goals and objectives, a note on the organization of the materials, suggestions for using them, a discussion of a few principles of career guidance, and notes on the student materials. The second and third sections consist of an English and a Spanish version of the four instructional units. Addressed in the individual units are the following topics: self-assessment (thinking about self, school, and work; the people in one's life; and identification of one's own values); the world of work (what work is like, where a paycheck goes, what different jobs pay, and how women figure in the work force); a job now (papers needed, techniques of summarizing personal facts and writing to get hired, places to look for work, and job interviews); and more schooling (choosing the best education for oneself, evaluating the choice made, planning, writing to get into school, and financing an education). Each section contains some or all of the following: vocabulary, instructional text, exercises, and a review quiz. Concluding the guide are supplementary classroom activities, including a note to the teacher, activities, and handouts. (MN) |
