AbstractThis study explored the relationship between the setting of a teacher center and the ways in which the center is used by persons who participate in the activities offered there, focusing on the Workshop Center for Open Education of City College, New York. A description is given of the facility itself--the physical plant, location, educational materials available, and enrichment programs offered. Activities taking place at the center on a typical day are depicted. Excerpts are offered of statements about the center from various types of users--teachers, center staff, college faculty, students, parents, and school administrators. Ways in which different perspectives of individuals and different groups of users influenced each other are discussed. Descriptions are also offered of personal or individual configurations of use of the building, materials, and programs. The final section of the report discusses the rationale for the center, and reflections by participants on ways that the center's offerings helped them to improve their work performance and enhanced their understanding of a wide variety of educational philosophies.
