| Abstract | A study examined the expectation that videotaped male models would be rated similarly to ratings previously found in research literature for red, blue, and monotone hues, and high, medium, and low levels of color saturation. Using a Graeco-Latin Square design, the ratings of 147 subjects (communications students at the University of Utah) were analyzed using the Activity, Potency, and Evaluation dimensions of nine semantic differential scales with both MANOVA and multiple regression. Results indicated that only for Activity did hues influence subjects' ratings of models and that models themselves had the most influence on the ratings. The major factor appeared to be the subjects' perceptions of, and expectations associated with, the term "model." Subjects may have rated models on the basis of how the models compared to subjects' expectations of how models should appear. The results suggest that people cannot be considered a phenomenon similar to inanimate objects when examining the influence of color. (A sample evaluation sheet, and tables of data are appended.)
