AbstractThis handbook was designed to provide a basic introduction to and understanding of stress and its impact upon children. Several coping techniques for children are presented along with the methods with which to teach them. These techniques are intended to provide a resource for school psychologists working with children and adolescents who are experiencing significant stress. Part 1, An Introduction to Stress, includes sections on a definition of stress, vulnerability to stress, types of stressors, signs of stress, and an assessment of stress. Types of stressors identified and discussed include parental divorce; child abuse; death of a parent, relative, or friend; and economics. Two rankings of the severity of stress of a variety of children's life events are given. Part 2, Stress Management Techniques, contains sections on: (1) groups for children and adolescents; (2) assertiveness training; (3) relaxation training, including a muscle relaxation exercises script; (4) biofeedback; (5) rational emotive therapy; (6) bibliotherapy; (7) suggestions for teachers; and (8) suggestions for parents. The appendices contain assessment measures, group letters, characterizations of junk thought and clear thinkers, a 20-page bibliotherapy reference list, and a list of books of interest to parents. Additional references for professionals in the areas of biofeedback, rational emotive therapy, and relaxation training, and a 5-page bibliography are included. (NB)
