Abstract | A discussion guide, one in a series on constitutional reform issues developed by The Jefferson Foundation as part of the Jefferson Meeting on the Constitution project, examines proposals to limit the President to a single 6-year term. The first section discusses the formative debate involved in the framing of the executive branch. The Presidential term and the Anti-Federalist response are also examined. The second section focuses on the continuing debate during the 19th century over the 6-year Presidency and discusses present reform issues and national interest. The third section examines reform packages during the 1900s and gives arguments for and against a single 6-year term. Also included is a brief legislative history (1826-1984) of the debate over the 6-year Presidential term. This document concludes with a listing of quotations contributed by historians and politicians reflecting on the 6-year Presidential term. (RSL) |
