AbstractThis teaching guide for second language instruction in North Carolina public schools outlines a competency-based program and provides specific guidelines for both modern languages and Latin. The introductory section provides an overview of the competency-based educational program, which includes information on philosophy and rationale, thinking skills, programs for exceptional children, and notes for teachers using the "Teacher Handbook." The main body of the guide outlines the modern language curriculum for grades K-12 and the Latin curriculum for grades 7-12. Introductory information for each curriculum covers the purpose and overview of each, an outline of the courses of study, and an outline of desired learning outcomes. The modern languages curriculum outline is divided into four sections: Grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. For each level the major emphases are outlined, and the goals, objectives, and measures are detailed for each language skill and for culture. The classical Latin curriculum has two divisions: grades 7-8 and the high school curriculum, grades 9-12. For each level, an outline is provided of goals, objectives, and measures in reading, writing, derivation, and culture and literature. Appended materials include related statewide legislative and descriptive documents, high school graduation course requirements, a sample page from the general statewide competency-based curriculum, notes on testing requirements and the textbook adoption process, an instructional services organizational chart, and a form for suggesting changes.
