| Abstract | This report presents the highlights of a conference held to critically examine the state of education in America and to set goals for the future of education in America. Those participating in the conference included public and private school teachers and administrators, college teachers and administrators, college students, parents, state representatives, and representatives of the Montana State Department of Education. Keynote speakers for the six general sessions were: Ernest L. Boyer, Emeral A. Crosby, Francis N. Hamblin, Lyn Gubser, Lee Noel, and Roxanne Bradshaw. The six general sessions encompassed: (1) a critical examination of American education; (2) future directions for American education; (3) "A Nation at Risk"; (4) the global stakes; (5) increasing student competence--an emerging indicator of educational excellence; and (6) the education reports and future directions.
