| Abstract | These workshop sessions were designed as a series to assist low income parents to deal more effectively with the primary sources of stress in their lives, with particular attention given to issues of parenting, self-care, and the reduction of isolation. Sessions were field-tested by highly qualified and experienced trainers, each of whom also had clinical experience and high levels of knowledge of child development and parenting. Workshop Session I defines stress and points out signs indicating stress. Session II focuses on helping parents to identify activities that give them pleasure or that they would like to do, and then to plan and later carry out one such activity. Sessions III and IV discusses child development and parental stress. Session V explores child development and parental values. Sessions VI and VII, respectively, probe reasons for children's behavior, and the relationship between anger and stress. Session VIII reviews previous material and offers conclusions. Users of this curriculum are cautioned about their choice of trainers -- the workshop sessions require trainers who are knowledgeable about stress, group process, counseling, child development, and parenting and who can deal effectively with individuals experiencng high levels of anxiety, stress, or even crisis in their lives.
