AbstractThe twelve essays in this collection, selected by leading teacher educators, explore the composition process and composition instruction. The first essay, "Toward Righting Writing" by Arthur Diagon, serves as a prologue while the second section, "getting started," consists of "A Way of Writing" by William Stafford, "Understanding Composing" by Sondra Perl, "Write Before Writing" by Donald Murray, and "How to Completely Individualize a Writing Program" by William A. Clark. The third section, "responding," includes "Teaching the Other Self" by Donald Murray, "Writer-Based Prose: A Cognitive Basis for Problems in Writing" by Linda Flower, and "Writing for the Here and Now" by Stephen Tchudi. The fourth section, "writing and literature," includes "Making Time" by Nancie Atwell and"Looking for Trouble: A Way to Unmask Our Readings" by Thomas Newkirk. The fifth section, "writing across the curriculum," includes "Language Across the Curriculum" by Bryant Fillion and "Journals Across the Disciplines" by Toby Fulwiler. Each of the sections concludes with suggestions for questions and a list of references. An appendix presents a discussion of the grammar question and a list of titles for further reading. (EL)
