Abstract	This manual is intended to train distance education staff in how to develop and edit teaching materials. Addressed in the individual units of the guide are the following topics: appointing writers, preparing to write, developing a course outline, selecting the structure of a unit, presenting the subject matter, developing student activities, providing study advice, judging reading level, editing the language of the material, developing testing materials, deciding on a format, copyediting, producing and printing the materials, maintaining the currency of and revising course materials, and coordinating writing and production. Each unit contains some or all of the following: a content outline, an introduction, exercises with comments, sample forms, a summary, and an assignment. A glossary and reading list conclude the manual. (MN)
