Abstract | The pre-kindergarten program in the San Antonio Independent School District was evaluated during the 1984-85 school year. The children's progress was measured informally by observation and was maintained individually on a checklist of skills. Interviews with principals and teachers revealed positive reactions to the program. Correlation existed between the pre-kindergarten and the kindergarten curriculum when skills were reviewed and compared. Classroom observation in ten randomly selected sites showed a structured, stimulating environment. A follow-up survey of students currently in first, second, or third grades and who had participated in the program as four-year-olds was conducted. These students were compared with a similar group who had not had pre-kindergarten experience. Findings of this comparison have not indicated that the program experience improves later school performance. Curriculum continuity from pre-kindergarten to primary grades was examined. The following materials used with the program are provided in the appendices: (1) pre-kindergarten curriculum themes and checklist; (2) interview guide; (3) selection criteria; (4) program objectives; (5) program announcement; (6) parental agreement, guidelines, training log, and participation log; (7) pre-kindergarten diploma; and (8) classroom observation form.
