AbstractThe employment status of 1984-1985 degree recipients in physics and astronomy was surveyed. Information is presented on changes in occupational status of physics and astronomy degree recipients between summer of 1984 and the following winter. The characteristics of graduates of both fields who were employed full-time or undertaking postdoctoral studies are compared in relation to sex, age, citizenship, type of research, and major subfields. Also covered are: major subfields of physics dissertations and those of physicists' initial employment; the occupational status of experimental and theoretical physicists; the characteristics of physics masters that influence the time required to secure employment; and the type of employer for physics doctorate recipients by subfield of Ph.D, work activity, whether the work is related/unrelated to physics, and whether a job change is desired. Finally, information on the employment of astronomy bachelors is included. Findings include the following: for physics graduates, by summer 1984, 38% of doctorate recipients had secured permanent employment, 48% had accepted 'postdocs,' and 4% were still seeking suitable employment. By winter 1984, 49% had secured potentially permanent employment, and two-thirds of physics bachelors secured their initial employment within a 2-month period. (SW)
