AbstractPart of a larger study of Puerto Ricans' language attitudes, an investigation of the attitudes of 104 high school teachers and students in Puerto Rico focused on whether the subjects dissented within or among groups on the published cliches or statements that stereotype Puerto Rican Spanish (PRS) as inferior. All but two subjects placed themselves in the middle class, and all had had exposure to other speech styles. Results showed that they generally perceived a speech continuity between PRS and the Spanish used in the rest of the Hispanic world, but they thought that PRS needed improvement, particularly in vocabulary. Although they considered that the language should be improved by some authority, they could not determine the source of that authority. Most subjects also expressed a feeling that there was something wrong with PRS, but they could not pinpoint it or suggest a remedy. Most felt that their own pronunciation was flawed in ways similar to those expressed in the stereotypes. Generally they did not find language to be as important as other factors in their social life, and they thought that the best Spanish was spoken in Spain. No interaction was found within or among groups of students and teachers. (MSE)
