| Abstract | The history and development of the U.S. higher education system are analyzed, using Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and its branch campuses as an example. Attention is also directed to the personality (i.e., characteristics and attitudes) of the individuals who function within the system/organization, methods of incorporating participants into the system (e.g., faculty recruitment and promotion), and an evaluation of the functionality of the U.S. system of higher education. Topics include: the effects of an aging faculty, trends in tenure, discrepancies in rank and tenure between male and female faculty, and student and faculty characteristics at Penn State. Specific concerns include: parents' educational and occupational background, parental income, student grades, student attitudes, and minority student enrollments. Structural-functionalism is discussed as a type of theoretical orientation to explain the higher education system. Four functional imperatives are discussed: adapting to the social and nonsocial environment, achieving the goal of formally socializing certain members of society, integrating the various subunits of the system, and maintaining the pattern within the system by which role-players can secure the goal. Some of the ways that higher education has adapted to societal needs is chronicled. (SW) |
