AbstractFuturists claim that computers will change the workplace and the entire society of the United States within the next few years. Already they are making many changes such as displacement of clerical workers and creation of more jobs for programmers and analysts. In the future, the majority of adults will need to be computer literate. However, definitions of computer literacy vary; some hold that computer literacy is the ability to interact with computers and use them, while others believe computer literacy involves only familiarity with computers; still others would define computer literacy as the ability to design and build computers. Despite the differences in definitions, most persons agree that adults need more computer education and that many are trying to get it. The old structures of semester- or year-long college or high school evening classes do not work well for adults. Many adults prefer shorter courses such as those given by computer manufacturers and dealers. Computer dealers often have classrooms built into their showrooms, and adults like to learn in these informal settings. The requirements for computer literacy will continue to increase. Nationally, computer literacy is a societal requirement that could eventually acquire the status of a basic skill. (KC)
