AbstractThis comprehensive report provides current information on the status of school age child care in Florida, an overview of Florida Statutes, a summary of benefits and problems with state involvement, and recommendations for action. An estimated 138,000 children ages 5 to 13 in Florida may be without care every day after school. Florida's school districts are attempting to meet their needs by developing after school programs through community schools and by contracting with local children's service organizations. Districts report needing help with transportation, funds for providing service to Title XX and other low-income students, start-up funds, and information services. Topics covered in the report include the following: national concerns for latchkey children, effects of self-care on children, Florida statutes, the extent of local school district involvement, three models of program delivery, descriptions of present programs, financial support for programs, and recommendations for state policymakers. In addition, tables and figures provide information on (1) school districts reporting school-age child care programs for the 1984-85 school year and (2) a summary of services provided by school districts. Relevant Florida statutes on use of school buildings, leasing of school facilities, community education, school transportation, and child care facilities are reviewed in the appendix. (DST)
