AbstractAimed at media professionals, students, and all others interested in better writing, this booklet is intended to share the wisdom on editing and writing distilled from the experience and thinking of the Associated Press Institute (API) staff and seminar attendees. Following an introduction, the booklet's first section--on writing--presents: essential elements in good writing such as clarity, style, and accuracy; the main steps for each story; a discussion on organizing the information when writing the lead and the story; lists of specific things writers can do to produce "quality" writing; the top 40 on the "enemies" list (such as wordiness, errors of fact, and confusing pronouns); useful formulas to gauge readability; suggestions for explaining difficult subjects; hints for writing a story as one writes a letter to an intelligent friend; points on spelling; ways to analyze what one reads; a brief discussion of buzz words and gobbledygook; suggestions for curing writer's block; discussion of the importance of a writing coach and of editing and rewriting; and a list of good books on writing and editing. The second, shorter section--on editing--focuses on the editor's tasks of tightening and polishing, offers headline techniques and guidelines for cutlines, tells how stories are selected, and gives information describing the American Press Institute.
