AbstractTabular data on Ph.D.'s earned by graduates of baccalaureate colleges and universities are presented for 50 top institutions, the 8 Ivy League universities, the "Big Ten" universities, 12 leading technical institutions, and colleges belonging to the Great Lakes Colleges Association and the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. The Ph.D's were conferred during 1951-1980 to students who earned bachelor's degrees during 1946-1976. Included are overall totals and subtotals by field (humanities, science, empirical science, life science, and social science). Using statistics from the National Research Council and the National Center for Education Statistics, institutional productivity ratios were adjusted for institutional size. A brief narrative summary provides highlights, including: high productivity ratios for a few leading technical institutions, high productivity of small liberal arts colleges, and high productivity in both science and humanities at four liberal arts colleges. Appended are information on the research methodology, data on the average number of bachelor's degrees conferred and the number of years for which data were available, and group data (e.g, the average number of Ph.D.'s per year for each institution in each group).
