| Abstract | A collection of 32 conference papers is presented as reflecting the state of the art in contrastive linguistics studies of English and other languages. The reports cover the following topics: 5 English contrastive projects (Romanian-English, Yugoslav-Serbo-Croatian English, English-Hungarian, and Finnish-English analysis, and a project from the International Hasselt Conference); 8 papers on approaches to contrastive linguistics in such areas as negation, interrogation, emphasis, perceptual constraints and pronominal modification, breadth and "factual" analysis, valence theory, the semantics of false pair analysis, modality and speech acts, and intonation in languages including German and Romanian; 11 papers concerning analysis of syntax and semantics in languages including Romanian, Mandarin Chinese, and Slavic languages as a group; and 8 papers on lexicology and error analysis in areas such as pluralization, singularization, countability, numericalization, verb derivation, deceptive cognates, codes in computing technology texts, Romanian and English stops, and prosodic elements in languages including Romanian, German, Russian and Hungarian.
