Abstract | The result of a survey of editors, students, teachers, and others knowledgeable in the field, this report provides profiles of 10 quality journalism schools and 10 outstanding instructors. Following an introduction and a description of the nature of the survey, the first portion of the guide presents descriptions of the journalism programs by their respective deans for the following schools: (1) University of Missouri, (2) Northwestern University, (3) University of Kansas, (4) Indiana University, (5) Columbia University, (6) University of North Carolina, (7) University of Florida, (8) University of Texas at Austin, (9) Ohio University, and (10) Syracuse University. The second portion of the guide presents profiles of 10 influential instructors, four of whom are on the faculty of the above-mentioned schools. The final portion of the guide presents five short essays on various aspects of journalism education, including a prescription for making journalism schools tougher, the need for reporters to understand statistics and quantitative research, and recruiting journalism students in a tight job market.
