Abstract | This handbook provides administrators and staffs of adult education programs with general information on volunteerism in adult education; information on specific programs and strategies, specifically Project SAVE (State Adult Volunteers in Education); and guidelines for program implementation. An overview of the impact of adult illiteracy precedes a section on building an adult reading program. These topics of concern to the adult basic reading tutor are covered: adult performance level competencies to be included in the reading program, contrasts between teaching adults and teaching children, qualities of good tutors, self-evaluation questions, characteristics of the functionally illiterate adult, and characteristics of a good adult basic reading tutor. The next section lists characteristics of many adult non-English-speaking students and their implications for tutors. Tips on teaching techniques and personal relationships are listed. A rationale for use of the Laubach technique and materials is presented, and information on ordering materials is provided. Steps for developing a local literacy program are also listed. A schedule and planning checklists for a training workshop are provided. The final two sections contain information on and examples of public relations and guidelines to help with corporate, foundation, and private organization fund raising.
