AbstractBeginning in fall 1982 the Aurora West Public Schools (Illinois) conducted a multi-year study to identify the nature of their instructional programs and to establish a set of position statements that would serve as guides for program review and change. A significant element of the process was the involvement of the entire staff in development of the position statements and extensive opportunities for public reaction to the position statements. The presentation outlines the steps followed, the criteria used, the issues addressed, and the progress to date. The use of the various national reports and their influence on the status of education beginning in 1983 are identified. Attached to this overview of the instructional audit are a chronological outline of the audit; a sample program report and a sample chart of program goals, both from the first year of the study; a booklet of staff position statements, a sample form for public response to these statements, and a newsletter reporting the progress of the audit after 2 years; and a 3-year progress report issued March 1985.
