Abstract | This curriculum guide for an employment preparation course for adults who speak English as a second language consists of 10 units on information and general living skills related to employment. The guide is split evenly between basic information needed to obtain a job and information needed once a job is obtained. A unit may consist of one or four sections. Each section is comprised of these basic components: a goal, objectives, and a list of activities for teachers and students. Worksheets provide information and material needed for the student to complete the activities. A total of 93 worksheets are included. The 10 units cover these topics: exploring personal and occupational interests, developing work vocabulary; job search (want ads, telephone book, job postings, leads), necessary documentation and information (personal and work information, references, resumes and documents such as a Social Security card); job applications (how to complete); employment letters; transportation (traveling by bus, car, taxi, plane, etc.); the interview; on the job (unions, time and pay--understanding pay checks and stubs, W-4 forms, time sheets and clocks, insurance benefits, job success--getting along with co-workers, how to lose a job, quitting, and safety awareness); and banks and credit (coins, savings accounts, checking accounts, how to use credit).
