Abstract | The classroom teacher needs to be able to arouse the interest of students and maintain motivation levels sufficiently high to keep students involved in learning tasks. This study describes techniques that will enable the teacher to make decisions about appropriate learning activities and student reinforcement procedures. The topic is discussed in a brief introduction, and a glossary of terms is presented. In the next section, 39 research articles are briefly annotated. Articles cover two topics: teacher behaviors and classroom climate, and factors to consider in using rewards. The findings of these studies are discussed in a five-page summary. Four recommendations are given on the basis of this research: (1) The classroom teacher should take responsibility for providing an atmosphere conducive to motivation for all students; (2) All students should be given opportunities for successful learning experiences; (3) All students should be allowed to help determine their educational goals; and (4) External reinforcement systems should be used only when necessary to engage student involvement and should be selected and monitored carefully.
