AbstractA needs assessment of microcomputer use in Illinois school districts was conducted as a basis for developing resources for identifying microcomputer applications for administrative, instructional, and student purposes. A 20-item questionnaire mailed to 200 Illinois school district superintendents and administrators addressed current and potential microcomputer uses, current competencies needed by educational personnel for educational computing, type of computers being used, and the role and cooperative efforts of the State Board of Education and regional consortia in expanding microcomputer use in the districts. Responses to questionnaire items are tabulated by size and type of school district, or--for six open-ended questions--analyzed by frequency of common responses. Overall results from the 104 returned questionnaires indicate that the uses and problems of microcomputers appear to be similar in most Illinois school districts. The majority use their microcomputers for both administrative and instructional purposes, including awareness, literacy, programming, and computer assisted instruction (CAI) in all areas. Needs for assistance in CAI/computer education, better software, staff training, and funding, are indicated, as well as a lack of leadership and assistance by the Illinois State Board of Education.
