AbstractParents served by the Madison, Wisconsin, Metropolitan School District were surveyed to gather information on parent employment and child care arrangements, and attitudes about the kinds of support that should be made available for school-age children. Also elicited were beliefs about the age when children could be safely left alone. A total of 7,437 questionnaires were distributed to all parents with children in the district's 27 elementary schools; 2,914 forms were returned. All completed surveys were tabulated for 12 schools, and a sample of 20 percent of the surveys was tabulated for each of the remaining 15 schools. Findings were reported in terms of the following categories of data: general characteristics of the population, current child care arrangements, time parents are home, problems with current arrangements, community supports for children, age parents believe children can be left alone for various periods of time, and parents' comments. Appended are the survey instrument; a table indicating percentages of two-parent and single-parent families served by each school; and brief summaries of comments concerning aspects of child care such as responsibility, needs, problems, and concerns for children's well-being.
