Abstract | As part of an ongoing process of curriculum revision at Reading Area Community College (RACC), this program review examines current basic skills programming and support services portions of the college curriculum. Following introductory comments in section I, section II reviews pertinent basic skills research, indicating that useful programs approach the student in a holistic, integrated manner. Section III provides a review of existing basic skills programs and support services at RACC. This section begins with an overview of student admissions requirements and categories of admission and then describes the counseling and testing services making up the college assessment program. Next, the developmental studies program is examined, including a statement of the program's intent and purpose; information on program funding and integration; an overview of student flow in the program through the stages of identification, needs assessment, development of the individual student plan, assessment, and followup; and a review of major activity areas (i.e., placement based on test scores, developmental instruction, counseling services, English as a second language services, learning skills project services, tutorial services, and basic skills labs). Section III also includes short descriptions of RACC's adult basic education and general education development preparation and testing programs. Section VI provides a summary of conclusions. Developmental Studies Program data are appended. (LAL) |
