| Abstract | The paper examines the role of alternative schools in the field of special education, with particular attention given to the education of behaviorally disordered or seriously emotionally disturbed children. The paper begins with information on the history of alternative schools for this population and continues with a discussion of identification, referral, and placement. Issues of how to effect social and behavioral development in the alternative school environment are noted, including the use of student progress systems. Aversive and deprivation-based intervention approaches are considered, and guidelines are offered for their use. The component of alternative programming designed to facilitate children's return to the mainstream is discussed, as are obstacles to the evaluation of alternative programs. (CL) |
