Abstract | This mathematics textbook was developed especially for use in bilingual education classes for children of Chinese immigrants, new to this country, who have not had a chance to learn English yet. While it provides children with an opportunity to study mathematics in their own language, examples and exercises are designed to help students become familiar with the American way of life. A special feature is the emphasis on the achievements of Chinese scholars in the field of mathematics, to help students attain pride in their heritage. The text can purportedly be used in a variety of ways to suit the needs of a particular learning situation. Simple and humorous examples are incorporated, and capturing students' interest is attempted by the manner of presentation. The mathematical content includes fraction ideas and operations, operations with decimals, ratio and proportion, and percent, including interest. (MNS) |
