Abstract | An assessment is presented of the status of fitness and sports promotion in Australia. Fitness and sports are treated as two separate elements in the overall picture. An attempt is made to identify national policy and the process by which that policy was developed. A description is given of how policies are implemented, with special emphasis on transmission downward to subnational levels of government. Primary attention is given to the national program, "Life. Be In It." Federal funding and the financial network supporting health activities are discussed. Also examined are the policies and roles of the state governments in Victoria and New South Wales. A summary of observations includes some comparisons between the national and state programs of Australia and those of Canada and the United States. (JD) |
