Abstract | Data on 1982 college and university enrollments and trends for the past few years are presented. Information is provided on enrollment in institutions of higher education by control and level of institution, student sex, and attendance status of student, major field of study, and race/ethnicity. Specific data include: enrollment of first-time freshmen in colleges, by control and institutional level; undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional enrollments by race/ethnicity; enrollments for the aggregate United States; level of enrollment, attendance status, and student sex for the 100 institutions with the largest enrollment in 1982; public and private college enrollments; and full-time equivalent and part-time enrollments. Highlights include the following: after several years of growth, all colleges and universities began to level off in 1982; public institutions reported enrollment gains in all types of institutions except doctoral and comprehensive; among private institutions, a 2.5 percent drop in doctoral enrollment occurred. Appendices include information on the survey methodology, a questionnaire and instructions, and the National Center for Education Statistics Classification of Institutions. (SW) |
