Abstract | The research project described in this paper examined the development of analytic writing abilities in late high school and college level students. Following a brief discussion of the project, in which 135 students at different educational levels wrote position papers on an assigned topic, and 35 participated in protocol analysis, the paper offers a detailed description of the six-stage model of the development of analytic writing abilities that has emerged from the research. The major portion of the paper provides analyses of student papers that illustrate each stage of the model. It concludes with a statement of the continuum of writing development that is suggested by the model. Appendixes contain copies of student papers, descriptions of the two writing topics, and outlines of two of the model's stages. (FL) |
