AbstractFollowing a brief overview on the program and grant proposal process, this paper describes the design and implementation of the Aging and Mental Health Certification Program at Madonna College in Livonia, Michigan. The project goals (to design a program, to prepare 120 trainees, to meet community and trainee needs) and accomplishment of the goals are discussed. A description of the organizational structure of the project, including the staff, the role of the gerontology advisory committee, and the field placement agencies (e.g., mental health agencies, nursing homes, senior centers, and foster homes) is presented. The curriculum is discussed in detail, including descriptions of the 30 hours of required coursework and the 200 hours of required field experiences. The specific objectives of the field experiences, the cooperating agencies, the nature and process of supervision, and the impact of the project on community needs are all discussed. Workshops and lectures beyond the required curriculum are described. An account of the recruitment and selection of program trainees is presented along with relevant demographic data, and an evaluation of the program is given in which methodology and results are presented in relation to the four main goals of the program. Conclusions, recommendations, and a discussion of future plans for continuation and dissemination complete the program description. Numerous appendices are included. (BL)
