AbstractThis study reviews literature on science anxiety related to such variables as sex, intellectual capacity, achievement, and attitudes. To measure science anxiety, a questionnaire (included in an appendix) was developed, pilot-tested on students in grades 5 and 7 in the Bowling Green (Ohio) School District, and administered in final form to 532 fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth grade students. ANOVA, MANOVA, and ANCOVA statistical analyses were done on the data. Among the major findings are the following: (1) feelings (particularly anxiety) toward science and science-related topics are significantly sex-related; (2) females at grade 4 already display more anxiety toward science than do males; (3) for this study, science anxiety did not increase with grade level; (4) since only 30 percent of fourth and sixth grade teachers compared to 100 percent of junior high school teachers rated science as first choice when asked to rate preferences for five different subject areas, it is speculated that teachers' attitudes may affect feelings toward science; and (5) significant differenes on science achievement in relation to science anxiety were found, with high levels of science anxiety correlating with low science achievement scores.
