Abstract | This monograph presents an assessment instrument that utilizes teacher and student behavioral indicators to assess the quality of inquiry instruction. The instrument provides teachers with feedback which not only assesses the presence of critical teaching skills, but also serves as a valuable training aid for helping them perceive how their own behaviors and responses could be modified to more effectively facilitate student learning. It is equally useful as a training aid for preservice or in-service teacher training, in laboratory or classroom settings. The Inquiry Teaching Competency Assessment (ITCA) is being used in the Weber State College performance based teacher education program, where validation studies are being conducted to evaluate its effectiveness in improving teacher inquiry instruction.
