AbstractA classroom activity using passport forms that students fill out themselves by interviewing classmates is described. The passport lesson is structured to be self-contained, presenting all necessary structures and vocabulary for successful functioning within the unit. It may be used any time during the language program to reinforce an aspect of the established curriculum or introduce practical, conversational vocabulary and is appropriate for secondary, postsecondary, and adult education settings and every level of difficulty, with modifications for the intended audience. In the classroom, the lesson is introduced by a brief conversational period in which students are asked personalized questions about themselves. Their replies are chosen from a teacher-prepared list, and related grammatical points can be covered. Students are then assigned partners to interrogate, and proceed to fill in the necessary information on passport forms. Finally, the students give the completed passports to their partners and ask them to verify the information noted. New partners may be assigned or students can work in groups of three or four for more conversation. The completed forms can be saved for future classroom use in another context. (MSE)
