Abstract | The stated objective of this handbook is to provide guidance in foreign language curriculum planning and teaching. Although written specifically for Arkansas educators, most of the resources and ideas are applicable to any foreign language program. Topics covered in the handbook are: (1) student competency goals; (2) descriptions of various teaching methods; (3) alternatives to traditional programs; (4) supplemental small group activities; (5) a skills continuum including listening, speaking, reading, and writing; (6) the benefits to students of taking Latin; (7) testing and evaluation of student and teacher performance including teacher evaluation forms for use by teachers, administrators, and students; (8) professional organizations; (9) extracurricular activities; (10) sources of career education materials; (11) suggestions for using different types of audiovisual equipment; (12) sources of print and nonprint instructional materials; and (13) miscellaneous recommendations for foreign language programs and classes.
