Abstract | This document reports the proceedings of a conference entitled, "The Case for Educational Restructuring," which was designed to re-examine values and assumptions underlying the traditional structure of secondary and postsecondary education. The central concern of the conference was to make a case for the formulation of a national, comprehensive youth policy which would foster access to higher education opportunities based on readiness rather than on chronological age. Major conference papers presented and included in this document are: (1) "Making a Mesh of Things: School-College Articulation" (Charles W. Meinert); (2) "Institutional Imperatives and Possibilities for Change" (Elizabeth Coleman); (3) "Educational Quality: Or Where is the Student in Educational Planning?" (Nancy R. Goldberger); (4) "Teacher Education: What is the Role of the Classroom and the Training for the Classroom?" (Janet E. Lieberman); (5) "Current Status of Youth Policy in Education and Prospects for the Future" (Michael Timpane); (6) "Early Exit" (Tommy M. Tomlinson); and (7) "Educational Restructuring in an Historical Perspective" (Leon Botstein). These proceedings also contain short summaries of two panel presentations, two observers' remarks, descriptions of seven model programs, biographies of presentors, and a list of participants. (JMK) |
