AbstractA study was conducted by the Mississippi Junior College Association to aid in the development of a statement of the role and mission of the state's junior colleges for the 1980's and beyond. From goal statements found in college catalogs and other documents, 41 were selected and grouped in broad functional categories (i.e., admissions/access, developmental/remedial, academic, vocational-technical, continuing education and special activities, student services, and general programs). An instrument, asking respondents to rank each goal statement in terms of "what is" and "what should be," was distributed to six targeted groups (i.e., college administrators, faculty, trustees, county supervisors, municipal officials, and state legislators). Based on responses from 92 administrators, 223 faculty, 121 trustees, 42 supervisors, 52 municipal officials, and 39 legislators, the study revealed that: (1) the total population felt that all but two goal statements were of average to high importance; (2) the top six goal statements on the "what is" basis were maintain tuition levels to allow access, provide university-parallel courses, provide vocational-technical courses, promote a positive image, cooperate for the transfer of credits, and provide open door admissions; and (3) the lowest rated goal statements related to advanced placement in technical, vocational, and academic courses; citizen involvement in planning; special interest courses; and student health services. The instrument is appended. (HB)
