AbstractResults of a survey of 91 innovative state humanities projects are presented, and the literature and theories about how adults learn are summarized. The representative sample of 91 public humanities projects are covered in alphabetical order. Most of the projects were selected because of their good humanities content and their success in generating strong audience participation. Formats of these projects include the following: bus tours, television and radio programs, computer instruction, exhibits with special features, games and simulation games, living history, humanists-in-residence, lectures, puppets, residential learning experiences, programs at shopping malls, sound and light shows, slide-tape presentations, additional multimedia presentations, theater as classroom, town meetings, traveling scholars, workshops, and programs for special audiences (e.g., senior citizens, inmates, and workers). Adult learning propositions of many theorists, including Carl Rogers and B. F. Skinner, are summarized. It is concluded that many methods, styles, and formats are needed to meet the learning needs of the adults, many of whom are capable of self-direction and have many life experiences as a resource.
