AbstractA study examined the nature of the schematic processes for a story presented in television, text, and radio form and for a story presented to above average and average readers. The story was parsed according to J. M. Mandler and N. S. Johnson's story grammar. Schematic processing was inferred from the pattern of node memorability for the different media and reading conditions. In addition, the absolute levels of performance on recall, recognition, and reordering memory tasks were compared for different media and reading conditions. Subjects, 88 sixth grade students of above average or average reading ability, were presented a story in either television, text, or radio form. The story schema was similar for stories presented on radio and text and these two forms of media differed from television. In addition, the story schema for above average and average readers was similar. In terms of absolute levels of memory performance, memory was better in the television condition than in either the text or radio conditions, while performance in the text and radio conditions did not differ. The memory for setting, beginning, goal, and reaction information varied as a function of the medium. (Author/FL)
