AbstractSCORE FOR COLLEGE was implemented in Orange County, California, public schools, to increase college and university eligibility among underrepresented high school students, through information, tutorial, and motivation programs concerning college admission. Directed primarily at students from minority ethnic groups, those from low income families, and females, the program included: (1) a summer residential program, which provided two intensive, 1-week sessions on creative writing, study skills, and college admission information; and (2) a school-year activities component, which provided counseling and tutoring services, activities to motivate students to aspire for college, and parent involvement activities. Evaluation of the program as it was implemented in five Orange County school districts, indicated the following accomplishments: (1) increased eligibility for admission to and increased actual enrollment at the University of California, among underrepresented groups; (2) participants' increased sensitivity to and acceptance of persons from different backgrounds; (3) improved attitudes toward school, self, and teachers; (4) improved academic performance; (5) better study habits; and (6) increase in the number of college aspirants.
