AbstractThe purposes of this study conducted by the Research and Evaluation Department on the Mesa (AZ) Public Schools Learning Disability - Extended Program (LD-X) were to (1) collect information describing the LD-X student population; (2) assess the degree of phasing of LD-X students into regular classes; (3) determine the perceptions and attitudes of LD-X students, their parents, regular classroom teachers, and principals towards the LD-X program; and (4) make comparisons between pilot and non-pilot LD-X programs. Achievement data were not available during the time of the study. Results of the study included the following: (1) there are approximately four times as many males as females in the LD-X student population; (2) on the average, LD-X students entered a special education program in the second grade; (3) the majority of LD-X students were initially enrolled in a special education program other than LD-X; (4) LD-X students have spent, on the average, a total of 26 months in special education programs; (5) phasing of LD-X students into regular classes is significantly higher from the fall through the spring semesters for students in pilot programs than for students in non-pilot programs; and (6) LD-X students, their parents, regular classroom teachers, and principals had generally positive attitudes towards the LD-X Program. Survey instruments and results by school and type of program are appended. (Author/LC)
