AbstractSimilarities and differences between outdoor education facilities using wildlife rehabilitation as an educational tool were examined. Data on funding sources, type and amount of public served, use of curriculum guides, statement of goals/objectives, and staff characteristics were obtained from questionnaires sent to 69 facilities. Findings indicate many similarities between the 43 facilities which returned completed questionnaires. Among these findings are those indicating: that most programs have been in operation for 7 years and use gifts as some portion of their budget; that although adults were the most frequently addressed, school groups between grade school and college were also highly marked; that only 9 (25 percent) of facilities implement a curriculum guide; that 30 (86 percent) have stated goals and objectives; that the most widely used evaluation scheme was use of informal comments from program participants and self-evaluation by the presenter; and that the majority of facilities utilized volunteers as both wildlife caretakers and educators. Even though the complexity and operation size of these facilities may vary drastically, these similarities emphasize the facilities' recognition of the need to provide care for wildlife and public education to cease inhumane behavior toward living creatures.
